Cancer seems to invade every part of our lives. Carcinogens are are deliberately added to our food and water. And if that wasn't enough, the items we use everyday, electronics and skincare products for example, can even give us cancer.

Despite what you've been lead to believe, there are ways to lower your risk of developing cancer, and no, it doesn't involve living in a bubble. In this article, you'll learn some of the foods and herbs you can start munching on to protect yourself from the world's most feared disease.

Sea Cucumbers

Studies show that sea cucumbers have anti-cancer properties. These marine animals contain a substance, called Frondoside A that blocks cancer-growing receptors and starves tumors.

Bitter Melon

Bitter Melon is popular for its variety of medicinal properties, but it may even prevent breast and prostate cancer. Tests performed on human breast cancer cells showed that bitter melon extract might inhibit cancer cell growth.


This vibrant fruit has surprising anti-cancer effects. Whole pomegranate extract displayed an ability to inhibit the growth of pancreatic cancer cells when tested on in-vitro human pancreatic cancer cells.


Shiitake, maitake, and cordyceps contain anti-tumor agents. They can kill and inhibit the growth of cancer cells. Research found that some mushrooms, combined with anti-cancer drugs, can treat drug-resistant cancers.


Fenugreek can protect against breast and colon cancer and cause leukemic cell death. It has antioxidant, anti-cancer, and anti-carcinogenic effects. In Chinese Medicine, fenugreek seeds are used to treat cervical cancer.


Phytochemicals are nature's cancer fighters. They eliminate carcinogens, reduce inflammation, slow the growth of cancer cells, decrease DNA damage and promote DNA repair. Phytochemicals are particularly special because they prevent the substances we consume from becoming carcinogens.

Red cabbage is also high in phytochemicals and prevents against prostate, bladder, colon, and breast cancers. It also lowers your risk of gastrointestinal and respiratory tract cancers. The number of anti-cancer properties found in this cruciferous vegetable should make it a staple in your diet.

Consume a variety of nutrient-dense, phytochemical-rich foods like garlic, red and green cabbage, blueberries, sprouts, kale, and watercress. Watercress has an impressive ability to suppress tumor cell growth and kill cancer cells.


Garlic is a medicinal food with potential to treat and prevent lung cancer. A single clove of garlic daily can lower your risk of breast, bowel, stomach, esophageal, and prostate cancers.


Geranium builds your resistance to disease and enriches your body with oxygen. Germanium inhibits tumor and metastatic growth, and according to one study, produces noticeable positive results after just one dose. Germanium may be effective against cancers of the lungs, brain, and lymphatic system. Medicinal plants like ginseng, aloe vera, and garlic contain germanium, but it can also be taken as a daily supplement.

Japanese Knotweed

Japanese knotweed root suppresses tumor cells and a variety of cancers. It contains one of the highest sources of resveratrol - an antioxidant with anti-inflammatory, and anti-microbial properties.


Algae has numerous properties that contribute to cancer prevention. It boosts your immune system, fights infection, and promotes healthy gastrointestinal bacteria. Chlorella is an algae used to treat cancer, stop the spread of it, and provide protection from the effects of radiation treatment. The medicinal herb turmeric is often referred to as ginger's cousin. Turmeric kills cancer cells and may be useful as a mediator of chemo-resistance and radio-resistance, according to studies.

Green Tea

When it comes to beverages, green tea could be a life-saver as it starves cancer cells and can slow or prevent cancer from developing.


Vitamins C, D, and E are antioxidants that prevent cancer. Vitamin E is particularly noteworthy as a skin cancer protectant. Vitamin D, on the other hand, could prevent over a dozen cancers, so don't skimp when it comes vitamins. Increase your vitamin D and E intake by eating portobello mushrooms, kale and other leafy greens, eggs, almonds, and sunflower seeds.
